The Departure-series is a work in progress inspired by many trips to Africa
in my early childhood. After I sustained a brain injury five years ago, vivid
memories of African women with colorful dresses and turbans kept re-appearing. The vibrant colors are also personal impressions and visual re-collections from these travels abroad.
In my latest work, I portray dramatic tales of departure. The main theme is told in variations of women, who have put on their dearest accessories. They wear the most precious jewelry that they own. They also carry jars of water for their long journey ahead. Their suitcases are filled with belongings too intimate to show. They have no choice but to leave their country. They will follow their husbands, who have already departed. They shall not come back to Africa. I portray them as faceless characters that are seeking for the "Promised Land". Their faces are anonymous because they could be the face of any woman in Africa. Growing up in Paris, I would periodically re-encounter African women shopping for colorful fabrics in the 18th district. I decided to paint them in order for them to be immortal. |
